At some point, birthdays get a little harder to plan.
When you’re a kid, somebody buys a cake, everyone shows up, and that’s pretty much the entire agenda. As an adult, you suddenly find yourself asking, “What do I actually want to do on my birthday?”
Maybe you don’t want a party. Maybe dinner at the same restaurant you always go to feels underwhelming. Maybe you’ve reached an age that feels significant and you want to mark it somehow.
Or maybe you simply want one day that feels different from every other Tuesday.
The good news is that adult birthdays can be considerably more fun once you stop worrying about what a birthday is supposed to look like.
Here are some ways to build one around what you actually enjoy.

If you already have enough stuff, skip the presents and spend the money on something you’ll remember.
Book concert tickets. Go horseback riding. Take a pottery class. Try a tasting. Book a beautiful hotel for a night. Find a restaurant you’ve been saving for a special occasion and finally make the reservation.
Some of the best birthday experience ideas are things you’ve already thought about doing but keep postponing because there never seems to be a good enough reason.
Your birthday is the reason.
And it doesn’t have to be enormous. A day trip somewhere new can feel just as memorable as an elaborate vacation if it gets you out of your usual routine.
Birthdays are a good excuse to be a little adventurous.
Take the pole fitness class.
Try aerial yoga.
Go kayaking.
Take a dance lesson.
Get the tattoo you’ve been thinking about for three years.
Book the fancy afternoon tea.
Go somewhere you’ve never explored.
Your version of adventurous doesn’t have to involve jumping out of an airplane. It simply needs to be something that makes you think, “I’ve always wondered what that would be like.”
That question is a pretty good place to find some of the most unique birthday ideas for adults.

There is nothing wrong with building an entire birthday around feeling good.
Sleep late. Get your hair done. Book a massage. Buy yourself flowers. Go out for an incredible lunch. Wander through your favorite shops without rushing. Get dressed up for dinner.
The point isn’t necessarily spending a ton of money.
It’s giving yourself permission to make decisions based entirely on what would make the day enjoyable.
That can feel surprisingly luxurious when most of your life involves considering everybody else’s needs too.
If that sounds particularly appealing, you may also like my guide to self-care ideas for moms.
Sometimes the answer to “what can I do for my birthday?” is leave town.
Grab two or three women you actually enjoy being around and go somewhere.
Charleston. Greenville. Savannah. The mountains. A cabin. A fancy hotel. Somewhere with good food and enough things to wander around and do.
You don’t need matching shirts and a twelve-person itinerary.
Book somewhere comfortable, make one or two reservations, and leave enough room for the trip to unfold naturally.
I’ll be adding a complete guide to girls’ trip ideas as part of this series, too.
Maybe you don’t want to travel at all.
Make a normal night feel decidedly not normal.
Put on the thing you never have anywhere fancy enough to wear. Make reservations somewhere beautiful. Order the cocktail. Go hear live music afterward. Stay out later than usual.
If you’re near the Midlands, I’ve already put together some of my favorite date night ideas in Columbia, SC, many of which work just as well for a birthday night out with your partner or friends.
Sometimes you don’t need more activities.
You just need the evening to feel special.

Adult birthdays do not require inviting everyone you know.
Have dinner with four people.
Host everyone in your backyard.
Make everybody bring something.
Rent a cabin with your closest friends.
Have a ridiculous themed party because you’ve secretly wanted one since you were twenty-three.
The older I get, the more I think the best gatherings are less about having a huge crowd and more about having the right crowd.
If there are people you leave feeling happier, lighter, funnier, or more like yourself after spending time with them, those are probably your birthday people.
You also don’t need a group at all.
Some women genuinely enjoy celebrating alone, and other women discover they enjoy it considerably more than they expected once they try it.
Take yourself somewhere beautiful. Go to the museum without waiting for anyone else to finish looking at things. Eat lunch with a book. Spend the afternoon thrifting. Take a long drive. Stay overnight somewhere.
A solo birthday doesn’t have to be the consolation prize for not having plans.
It can be the plan.
I’m going to build a separate guide specifically around solo birthday ideas for women, because there are enough good options there to deserve their own post.
Some birthdays feel bigger than others.
Thirty. Forty. Fifty. Sixty.
Instead of pretending it’s just another birthday, lean into the milestone.
Write yourself a letter about where you are right now. Have photographs taken. Buy one beautiful thing you intend to keep. Visit somewhere meaningful. Start a tradition.
You could even make a list of things you want your next decade to contain — not a rigid set of achievements, just experiences, places, relationships, and pieces of life you want more of.
I’ll also be putting together separate guides for 40th birthday ideas for women and 50th birthday ideas for women, because those milestones deserve more than generic party decorations.

This one is obviously close to my heart.
Women spend a remarkable amount of their lives avoiding cameras, criticizing photographs of themselves, or staying behind the camera while documenting everybody else.
A birthday — particularly a milestone birthday — is a really good reason to change that.
That might mean portraits with your family. A glamorous headshot session. Photographs with your children.
Or it might mean boudoir.
A boudoir session can be a way of documenting this version of you, at this age, in this body, at this particular point in your life.
At Bare Elegance Boudoir, you don’t need any experience in front of a camera. I direct everything, including the tiny details that can completely change an image: the angle of your chin, where you place your hands, the direction of your gaze, the position of your head, and even when to take a breath.
The poses are carefully built, but the goal is for the final images to feel effortless.
If you’ve ever thought, maybe someday, a birthday is a pretty good someday.

You are allowed to buy your own birthday present. 😂
The jewelry.
The handbag.
The antique you’ve been stalking.
The ridiculously nice bedding.
The art.
The hobby equipment.
Whatever makes sense for you.
Adults have a tendency to spend freely on necessities and then become weirdly reluctant to spend money on something whose primary purpose is simply bringing them pleasure.
If you can afford it and you genuinely love it, your birthday is as legitimate an excuse as any.

One of the nicest things you can give future-you is something to look forward to every year.
Take an annual birthday trip.
Buy one piece of jewelry.
Photograph yourself in the same place.
Go somewhere you’ve never been.
Eat the same ridiculous dessert.
Invite the same group of friends over.
Write yourself a letter.
Traditions accumulate meaning because you repeat them.
What feels small this year may become one of your favorite parts of turning another year older.
Start by ignoring what everyone else does.
Ask yourself what would make you genuinely excited to wake up that morning.
Maybe you want adventure.
Maybe you want a room full of people.
Maybe you want a massage, a hotel room, and nobody asking you for anything.
Maybe you want photographs that make you stare at yourself for a second.
Maybe you want to get dressed up and stay out too late.
There is no correct adult birthday.
The best celebration is simply one that feels like you chose it on purpose.
