Anniversary Gift Ideas: Romantic, Meaningful & Unexpected Gifts

Anniversary gifts can be surprisingly hard to shop for.

You want something that feels meaningful, but not predictable. Romantic, but not cheesy. Personal enough to actually say something about your relationship without becoming another thing that gets shoved into a drawer six months later.

The best anniversary gifts usually have one thing in common: they feel specific to the two people celebrating.

That might mean following the traditional anniversary materials, planning an experience together, creating something personal, or giving your partner something they would never expect.

If you’re looking for anniversary gift ideas that go beyond flowers and another restaurant reservation, here are a few places to start.

Use the Traditional Anniversary Gift as Inspiration

Traditional anniversary gifts can actually be a lot of fun when you treat them as inspiration instead of a rule.

Each year has historically been associated with a different material, usually becoming stronger or more valuable as the marriage gets older.

For example, the first anniversary is traditionally paper, which works beautifully for photographs, albums, handwritten letters, artwork, maps, books, or tickets to an experience.

The fifth anniversary is wood, opening the door to handmade furniture, engraved keepsakes, wooden image boxes, artwork, or something planted together that will grow over time.

And the tenth anniversary is traditionally tin or aluminum, which can become custom metal artwork, engraved keepsakes, or even a photograph printed directly onto aluminum.

If one of those milestones is coming up, I’ve put together more specific ideas for each:

You don’t have to follow the tradition literally. Sometimes it simply gives you the idea you needed.

Give an Experience Instead of Another Thing

Some of the best anniversary gifts don’t come in a box.

Book the concert tickets.

Spend a weekend somewhere neither of you has been.

Reserve the ridiculously nice restaurant you always talk yourselves out of.

Take a cooking class, go horseback riding, plan a wine tasting, rent a cabin, see a comedy show, or finally do the thing you’ve both said, “We should do that sometime,” about for three years.

Shared experiences have an advantage over physical gifts: the gift becomes another piece of your history together.

If you’re close to Columbia, I also put together some of my favorite date night ideas in Columbia, SC for couples who want to make a normal night out feel more like an occasion.

Recreate Something From the Beginning of Your Relationship

You don’t necessarily need a new experience.

Sometimes going backward is better.

Return to the restaurant where you had your first date. Make the meal you ate the night you got engaged. Go back to your wedding venue. Visit somewhere you went when you were newly together.

Pull out old photographs and recreate one.

Listen to music you played constantly during the first year you were dating.

The longer you’ve been together, the stranger and sweeter it can be to revisit the people you were at the beginning.

Turn Your Memories Into Something You Can Keep

Most couples have thousands of photographs and surprisingly few of them printed.

An anniversary is a good excuse to change that.

Create an album from a favorite trip. Print photographs from your wedding or first years together. Frame an image that has lived on your phone forever. Have a map made of somewhere meaningful.

You can also collect memories that aren’t photographs: ticket stubs, letters, notes, recipes, postcards, children’s drawings, or tiny things that would mean absolutely nothing to anybody except the two of you.

The value isn’t necessarily in what it costs.

It’s that nobody else could receive exactly the same gift.

Choose Something Connected to Their Actual Interests

Romantic gifts don’t have to be traditionally romantic.

Sometimes a really good anniversary gift is simply proof that you’ve been paying attention.

If your husband loves woodworking, cars, fishing, music, gaming, golf, cooking, camping, watches, books, or some obscure hobby you’ve learned considerably more about than you ever intended to, use that.

Upgrade something he already uses.

Find something he would love but probably wouldn’t buy for himself.

Book an experience connected to the hobby.

You can always make a practical gift feel more personal with a handwritten note or small anniversary element.

A gift he genuinely loves beats a theoretically romantic gift he doesn’t care about.

Commission Something That Only Exists for the Two of You

Custom work is one of my favorite categories for milestone anniversaries.

Have an artist paint your home or wedding venue.

Commission a portrait of your pet.

Have jewelry made using a meaningful stone or design.

Order custom woodwork.

Turn a photograph into wall art.

Have your wedding vows professionally printed.

The extra planning involved in custom work is part of what makes it feel different from something grabbed off a shelf.

Write the Thing You Usually Don’t Say

You can spend a lot of money on an anniversary and still have the most meaningful part of the gift be a piece of paper.

Write a letter.

Talk about what you remember from your wedding day.

Tell your partner what you appreciate about your life now.

Write about something difficult you survived together.

Tell them what you hope the next five or ten years look like.

This works especially well paired with another gift because it gives the object a story.

And if you’re celebrating your first anniversary, it happens to fit the traditional paper anniversary perfectly.

Plan a Gift Around the Number of Years

The anniversary number itself can give you a framework.

Five years? Choose five favorite memories.

Ten years? Write ten things you love about your life together.

Twenty years? Revisit twenty photographs.

You could give one small gift for every year, choose a destination connected to the number, or create a collection showing how much has changed since your wedding day.

This is especially useful when you want something sentimental but aren’t naturally a sentimental-gift person.

Give Something Completely Unexpected

There is something wonderful about an anniversary gift your partner absolutely did not see coming.

That might mean surprise travel.

Tickets to something they assumed was sold out.

A custom piece of art.

Or something much more personal.

For some women, that’s a boudoir session.

A boudoir album or collection of printed photographs can become an anniversary gift that is completely specific to your relationship. Depending on the anniversary, the physical artwork can even tie into the traditional material — fine-art prints for a paper anniversary, a wooden image box for five years, or metal wall art for an aluminum tenth anniversary.

At Bare Elegance Boudoir, sessions are completely guided. I direct posing down to the details — hands, chin position, head angle, gaze, and the tiny adjustments that make an image feel natural instead of stiff.

You don’t have to arrive knowing how to pose or somehow become comfortable in front of a camera overnight.

That part is handled for you.

And although the finished photographs may be intended as an anniversary gift, the session itself can become something you did for yourself too.

Make the Celebration Part of the Gift

You don’t necessarily have to separate “the gift” from “the anniversary.”

Plan the entire day.

Sleep late. Go somewhere for brunch. Get dressed up. Book something you’ve never done together. Have dinner somewhere beautiful. Stay overnight instead of driving home.

You can give one another small gifts during the day, but let the celebration itself be the main event.

Some years, that may be considerably more memorable than exchanging another object.

Start a Tradition You Can Keep

An anniversary is also a good opportunity to create something you repeat every year.

Take one photograph in the same place.

Write one another a letter.

Try one new restaurant.

Travel somewhere you’ve never been.

Buy one piece of art together.

Recreate your wedding dessert.

Watch your wedding video.

Ask each other the same handful of questions every anniversary and save the answers.

Traditions become valuable because time accumulates around them.

A silly thing you start this year may be incredibly meaningful twenty years from now.

What Makes a Good Anniversary Gift?

A good anniversary gift does not have to be expensive.

It should make sense for the relationship.

That might mean sentimental, practical, sexy, adventurous, luxurious, funny, nostalgic, or some combination of all of those.

Pay attention to the things your partner actually values.

And remember that anniversaries are not really about proving how much you love someone with a purchase.

They’re an excuse to stop ordinary life for a minute and acknowledge:

We’ve built something together.

That’s worth celebrating.
